I’ve served this co*cktail to friends and strangers for years. Between bartending and waiting tables, I can’t even count the number of time I rang this drink in. I’ve seen it served in a martini glass with no ice and a lime wheel to garnish. Other times it’s served frozen in a giant margarita glass. Me, I go a more traditional route pouring this pink dream into a rocks glass. But I can’t leave well enough alone, so I rim the glass with lime sugar and serve it over over ice. Perfection.
How to Make a Pomegranate Margarita
- Make lime sugar by combining sugar and lime zest together with your fingertips to release the citrus oils. Spread out on a plate.
- Rim your co*cktail glass with a lime wedge (or dip in lime juice) and then dip in the sugar.
- Carefully fill the glass with ice so you don’t knock the sugar off.
- To a co*cktail shaker filled with ice, add lime juice, tequila, pomegranate juice, triple sec, and simple syrup. Shake until cold and strain into your glass. Garnish with a like slice if you like.
Sure, there’s pomegranate margarita mix out there, but with a recipe this easy why bother?!
What’s the best tequila for a pomegranate margarita?
I like a good quality silver tequila for this pomegranate margarita recipe. It’s smooth and simple. It’s doesn’t add too much of a punch like a gold tequila would. While you can use a gold, reposado, or even anejo tequila if you REALLY wanted to silver is your best bet here.
Pro Tip: This margarita isn’t all that sweet. The lime juice is pretty tangy and cuts the sweetness in the pomegranate juice. I add a little simple syrup to balance things out. But if you like it sweet add more simple syrup to taste. You do you.
If you’re making this recipe for a crowd, I’ve got you covered! The recipe below has instructions for a pitcher of margaritas. Somedays it’s not nice to play bartender all day long.

Ingredients
Lime Sugar:
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons lime zest (1 large lime)
Margarita:
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 2 ounces premium silver tequila
- 2 ounces pomegranate juice
- ¾ ounce triple sec
- ¾ ounce simple syrup (plus more to taste)
- Ice
- Lime wheel for garnish
- Lime wedge to rim glass
Instructions
Lime Sugar:
In a small bowl, combine sugar and lime zest. Use your fingertips to rub the sugar and lime together to help release those citrus oils! Pour lime sugar onto a small plate and spread it out as wide as your co*cktail glass.
Margarita:
Cut a slit in the center of a lime wedge. Place the lime wedge on the glass and run it around the rim of the glass until coated. Set aside lime wedge and save it for your next glass.
Dip the glass rim into lime sugar. Turn and press the glass into the sugar until the rim is well coated.
Carefully scoop ice into the glass (so you don't knock off the sugar).
Fill a co*cktail shaker with ice. Add lime juice, tequila, pomegranate juice, triple sec, and simple syrup. Cover and shake well for 30 seconds.
Strain the margarita into your serving glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
Notes
For a Crowd: Combine 1 cup fresh lime juice, 2 cups tequila, 2 cups pomegranate juice, 3/4 cup triple sec, 3/4 cup simple syrup in a 2-quart pitcher Stir together, and then serve over ice. Makes 8 co*cktails.
